About the Society

What is the Instruction to John Society?

We are a non-profit organization of Catholics sharing a belief in a holy, catholic and apostolic church. Part of this belief is an acknowledgment of the fact that a strong and traditional priesthood is fundamental to the health of Christ's church.

What is our purpose?

In order to improve the retention and recruitment of qualified men to the priesthood, we as Catholic laity, must assist in the maintenance of their morale. We do this by removing some of the responsibility and difficulty of caring for their parents, particularly in their senior years. Much like soldiers in battle, these priests can take comfort in knowing their loved ones are being cared for at home, allowing them to focus on the challenges of their difficult work.

What is the significance of our name?

In the Gospel of John, specifically chapter 19 v.26-27, the disciple John is asked to care for Mary, Jesus' mother. Perhaps this moment of the crucifixion is one of the best examples of Christ's dual nature as both God and Man. Even while hanging from the cross, bearing man's sin, he responded in a manner like any good son would ... expressing concern for his mother.

  26

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother: Woman behold your son.

27

Then he said to the disciple: Behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

We believe that these important words, spoken at such a significant moment, have relevance today. Christ's instruction to John expressed the importance of the parental relationship. For those that play a special role as Christ's soldiers (our priests), we are obligated to carry on this responsibilityThe responsibility to care for the parents of priests.

What is our goal?

Our goal is to provide economic, physical, emotional and spiritual support, through the Catholic Laity, to the parents of priest. Thus demonstrating our love and obedience, as John did, when he was instructed by Jesus to care for His mother.  This in a very real way, places us at the foot of His cross. What a privilege ... What an awesome challenge.
